Von Hohnel’s High Casqued Chameleon gives Birth
21/10/2024
The spectacular birthing process of chameleons begins in the morning when the female basks in the sun, raising her body temperature sufficiently. She then deposits her eggs, encased in transparent membranes, around some rough twigs. Once the membranes rupture, the young chameleons hatch. They are fully independent from birth and begin to disperse into their environment, starting to eat on their very first day. This process was previously referred to as ovoviviparity, as it represents an intermediate stage between egg-laying and live-bearing. However, it has since been reclassified as viviparity.
