Chamaeleon Crab / Red Apple Crab - Metasesarma aubryi

Originating from Sulawesi and Java Islands in Indonesia, Chameleon Crabs are now found in various locations such as New Caledonia, Taiwan, Gulf of Thailand, Sumatra, New Guinea, Rotuma, the Morotai Islands, and the Mergui Archipelago. These crabs typically inhabit areas near river streams within dense tropical forests. The Metasesarma aubryi species favors densely wooded and shady regions close to water bodies where they can dig and seek shelter. Despite their name, Red Apple crabs are relatively small with adult crabs averaging only 2.5 to 4 cm (1 to 1.6 inches) in shell width and leg spans barely reaching 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inches). Not all Red Apple crabs exhibit a vivid red coloration; their carapace color can range from dark bluish to purple with orange edges. They feature red round claws, yellow to green eyes, and brown legs. Some Metasesarma aubryi crabs may sport a yellow horizontal line on the frontal area between their eyes, although this is not a distinguishing characteristic of the species. Also known as Chameleon crabs in Indonesia, these crabs can change color based on their mood and environmental surroundings.
