Chameleons are generally considered solitary animals, but this assumption is completely wrong. On the contrary, chameleons are social creatures with a very complex system of intraspecific communication based mainly on visual signals, due to their reliance on eyesight as the dominant sensory organ. This communication is usually performed over distance, using displays of color and body postures, with some exceptions when they come closer, leading to more pronounced interactions.

For instance, the Wills' Chameleon from eastern central Madagascar demonstrates interaction between a male and a non-receptive female during an incidental encounter. The male approaches the female, who, being non-receptive, vigorously signals that he should keep his distance. She employs body language characterised by an inflated and laterally flattened body, an expanded gular pouch, and vigorous shaking movements with the entire body and eyes. Additionally, her specific warning coloration features dark background tones with bright orange, yellow, and green spots, all signaling her non-receptivity.
