How to Handle Safely a Big Chameleon

28/01/2025

Chameleons are best left alone, as they do not enjoy handling, they are wild animals that thrive when observed from a distance. However, there are specific scenarios—such as for research or captive management—where a keeper or breeder needs to know how to handle a chameleon safely, minimizing the risk of injury to both the animal and the handler.

Typical situations that may require handling include inspecting the chameleon, examining its mouth cavity, administering medication, or force-feeding and force-hydrating.

For safe handling, quickly grasp the chameleon with your hand, ensuring that the dorsal crest remains in your palm. Use your thumb and index finger to gently secure the head just behind the eyes. This method allows for better control, reducing the chance of being bitten or injured. While handling, it's essential to leave the chameleon's strong feet fixed on a branch, allowing you to carry out your tasks swiftly and gently. Afterward, release the chameleon promptly to minimize stress and ensure its well-being.
